I really love this Gen-X rant:
The first generation to do worse than its parents? Please. Been there. Generation X was told that so many times that it can’t even read those words without hearing Winona Ryder’s voice in its heads. Or maybe it’s Ethan Hawke’s.
We watched Reality Bites the other day; it was, basically, OK. But having also seen Before Sunrise not too long ago, I’m tired of being simultaneously jealous of how cool Ethan Hawke is and incredible annoyed at how smug his whole “artistic outsider” thing is. But anyway, here’s [some more of] what ranting Gen-Xer Mat Honan has to say:
Generation X is used to being fucked over. It lost its meager savings in the dot-com bust. Then came George Bush, and 9/11, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Generation X bore the brunt of all that. And then came the housing crisis.
Generation X wasn’t surprised. Generation X kind of expected it.
It makes me feel kind of bad, coming from a younger and what he calls a “larger, much more vocal” demographic. But if it’s any comfort to the people 10-15 years older, the way things are going us lot are gonna be even worse off than Gen X in retirement (if that concept still exists when we reach our 60s/70s) so, you know.
