Really interesting to see the physical impact of China’s leap for African resources. It looks like a lot of solid infrastructure going up, which is obviously good (did you know that something like only 2% of Africa’s trade is with itself? Crazy). The obvious question is whether the development will be self-sustaining or whether all this stuff will fall into disrepair after a few years. I tentatively think not, at least judging by Kenya, which I saw quite a bit of in 2001, 2007 and 2009, with substantial jumps in development visible on each return. It’s kind of obvious to say, but the growth and impact of mobile phone use over there is something to behold.
