According to this story (linked from, of all places, Rock, Paper, Shotgun), a retired Indian Gurkha named Bishnu Shrestha found himself in the middle of an armed robbery while travelling by train through West Bengal. There were 40 bandits seizing cash, jewellery, phones, etc. from the passengers. When they attempted to rape a girl travelling in the same carriage as him, though, Mr. Shrestha acted. He drew his khukuri (big knife) and fought back at the robbers. He killed three of them and injured a further eight. The rest of them fled, leaving behind much of the loot. Mr. Shrestha is being honoured by his regiment and the Indian government.
Yup, there were 40 of them.
