It’s epic takedown time! Maria Bustillos on The Awl does not like Harry Potter.
Key criticisms: 1) promoting the myth of “chosenness” as a route to success, rather than, you know, working hard to make the most of your abilities. 2) Rowling writes rubbish and the elements of the world she creates (magic items and spells etc) are entirely at the service of the plots.
She goes on to say that kids should be reading Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials instead, which is kind of the default alternative to Harry Potter, and very good, but I wish there were some more options?
Years ago I read a fantastic critique of the Potter series’s literary merits, but I fear it is lost to the world. Will post if I can find.
